Reflections

Bismillah,

Alhamdulilah, I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing what boot-leg internet is like. Its superbly interesting..subhana’Allah. Allah truly blessed me with a gift on black-Friday which I have been wanting for a very long time. Some gifts are so dear and bring so much benefit and I pray this gift will last me for a while.

Many of the scholars we have covered in Torch Bearers have lived lives that many of the people learning about them could relate. Subhana’Allah, Umar Ibn Abdul-Azeez was a scholar who was truly an enigma to me. Compared to the other scholars who many grew up in poverty and rose from the state to become wealthy-well off folks in their society, Umar Ibn Abdul-Azeez had been completely the apposite. A man used to wealth from the cradle did not relish his wealth as anyone used to the comforts. He was scholar, khalifa, and came from a line of great men such as Abdullah Ibn Umar (uncle) and Umar r.a (grandfather).

Learning about Umar Ibn Abdul-Azeez has been an amazing experience and as I recall many who took the class, claimed that Umar Ibn Abdul-Azeez was their favor scholar out of all that we had studied in the class. I remember thinking Salmaan Ibn Mahran Al-Amash for a different reason. Furthermore, Umar Ibn Abdul-Azeez has come to my mind of late as I’ve had the chance to listen to surah Al-Qasas by Bukhatir. On his death bed, Umar Ibn Abdul-Azeez recited:

Tilka alddaru alakhiratu najAAaluha lillatheena la yureedoona AAuluwwan fee alardi wala fasadan waalAAaqibatu lilmuttaqeena

That Home of the Hereafter We shall give to those who intend not highhandnedness or mischief on earth and the end is (best) for the righteous [Al Qasas:83]

Prior to that it was said that ‘he ordered everyone to leave the room, including his wife, and to close the door behind them..they heard him saying, “Welcome to such faces, which are not similar to the faces of humans or jinn” When I read now, I think about the verse in Surah Fussilat where Allah speaks of the angels that come at the time of death to those who rightous-to console them during their time of pain-and to give them the glad tidings of Jannah. Subhana’Allah, may Allah make us of those who are the likes of Umar Ibn Abdul-Azeez, who through righteousness in the dunya, their hereafter will be secure.
